Expanded Duties Dental Assistant Georgia
The Expanded Duties Dental Assistant (EDDA) designation in Georgia was established in 1989 or 1990. Dr Jim Bob Williamson developed the original Expanded Duties (Functions) Certification courses for the Georgia Dental Association. After the first course, Dr Joe Hair contacted Dr Williamson to offer his help to serve the dentists in the State of Georgia, and he has done so since1990.
During the 32 years that Dr Hair taught for the GDA, he listened to the dentists and their assistants who took the courses. The courses offered through Expanded Duties LLC include the functions (or duties) most requested and excludes those less in demand. Customized courses could be developed for larger groups.
Prior to The Georgia Board of Dentistry’s designation of Expanded Duties Dental Assistants (circa 1990), the delegation of tasks at the dental office was much more fluid. The simple guideline was, “Any procedure/task/function that is reversable could be delegated to a staff member.” The problem was the definition of “reversable dental procedure.” The Board has now defined those duties as follows:
General duties performed by a dental assistant – Rule 150-9-.01 General Duties of Dental Assistants
Duties allowed to be performed by an Expanded Duties Assistant – Rule 150-9-.02 Expanded Duties of Dental Assistants
And, prohibited use of technologies – Rule 150-9-.03 Prohibited Use of Technologies by Dental Assistants

An Expanded Duties Certification is beneficial to both the assistant and the practice:
The EDDA has more job satisfaction and sense of worth when s/he takes a more active role in patient treatment.
In many instances, the EDDA becomes a producer and helps to cover the overhead in the office.
When the dentist has legally delegated to his/her EDDA, the dentist is free to provide treatment to other patients.
Expanded Duties LLC is an Expanded Duties Dental Assistant Program Recognized and Approved by the Georgia Board of Dentistry
