In orthodontics, the Expanded Duties Dental Assistant serves the same function as all other Orthodontic Expanded Duties Dental Assistant.EDDAs: Keep the doctor on task and on time while performing all of the tasks that can be legally delegated to an expanded duties dental assistant.  This allows the doctor to perform those “doctor only” tasks and move on the the next patient.  Working this way allows shorter appointments.  Shorter appointments mean more availability, and all patients appreciate shorter appointments and more options for appointments.

Below is the specific list of delegable duties for orthodontics. Since vital signs have been deemed to be an expanded duty, it is included in all offerings by Expanded Duties LLC because everyone should at least understand and know how to record a pulse and blood pressure.

Below is the specific list of delegable duties for orthodontics. Since vital signs have been deemed to be an expanded duty, it is included in all offerings by Expanded Duties LLC because everyone should at least understand and know how to record a pulse and blood pressure.

Upon successful completion of this course the EDDA will be able to legally perform the following duties in the dental office:

  • Take and record vital signs
  • Place and remove pre-treatment separators.
  • Select, pre-fit, cement, cure, and remove ortho bands or brackets.
  • Apply primer and bonding agents to etched enamel or dentin; and light cure – No Laser (150-9-.03)
  • Place springs on wires.
  • Place hooks on brackets.
  • Band, select, and pre-size arch wires and place arch wires after final adjustment and approval by the dentist.
  • Remove bonded brackets with hand instruments only.
  • Remove loose or broken bonds.
  • Rebond brackets after a licensed dentist has examined the affected tooth and surrounding gingiva and found no evidence of pathology.
  • Make impressions for passive orthodontic appliances.
  • Digital scans for fabrication orthodontic appliances and models
