The Expanded Duties Hygiene
Dental Assistant is another unique position in the dental office: a liaison between the dentist and the hygienist. This EDDA (Expanded Duties Dental Assistant) works to keep both the dentist and the hygienist on schedule.
The Hygiene EDDA greets and seats the patient, charts with the hygienist, takes radiographic images prescribed by the doctor, completes exam and treatment planning with the doctor, and informs the hygienist of the treatment plan. In this arrangement, the doctor is performing duties only allowed the doctor to perform, the hygienist is performing only hygiene duties, and the EDDA is performing those duties which can only be delegated to an expanded duties dental assistant.

Since vital signs have been deemed to be an expanded duty, it is included in all offerings by Expanded Duties LLC because everyone should at least understand and know how to record a pulse and blood pressure.

Upon successful completion of this course the EDDA will be able to legally perform the following duties in the dental office:
- Take and Record Vital Signs
- Make impressions to be used to fabricate a night guard (bruxism or muscle relaxation appliance). All adjustments must be performed extraorally. Final adjustment must be made by the dentist.
- Make impressions for passive orthodontic appliances.
- Monitor the administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen; turn off nitrous oxide/oxygen at the completion of the dental procedure and make adjustments to the level of nitrous oxide/oxygen, but only following the specific instructions of the dentist.
- Apply topical anticariogenic agents.
- Apply pit and fissure sealants, and primer and bonding agents to etched enamel or dentin; and light-cure with a fiber-optic light source (not to include the use of a laser device).
